Whether running to or away from fire, the crew exudes a sense of joy. In fact, Only the Brave is actually a fairly lighthearted movie with several laughs. In many ways, this scene reflects the humor and camaraderie found by The Granite Mountain Hotshots, despite the danger. Duct tape is used as a substitute, and once the practical joke is underway, a member of the crew produces the chin strap from a pocket. One hilarious scene shows McDonough without a chin-strap for his helmet, a requirement before getting on a helicopter. Ultimately he earns respect through pure determination and earned respect. The brunt of many jokes is McDonough, who was initially an outcast of sorts. They bonded like a family, often resorting to locker-room talk about women and masculinity. The training they undergo is literally for life-threatening situations so, it’s taken incredibly serious. Their formation and certification as a hotshot crew would be historic as the first such municipal organization in the nation. Their ultimate goal is elite Type 1 hotshot status, front-line work equally exciting and dangerous. Forming The Granite Mountain HotshotsĮric Marsh (Josh Brolin) leads a team of dedicated men in the city of Prescott, AZ who have trained for years but are relegated to fire cleanup and maintenance as Type 2 wildland firefighters, skilled men who often have to fight through bureaucracy just to do their job. Some have taken umbrage with minor details, particularly chronology and supporting characters, but director Joseph Kosinski has created a hyper-realistic homage, even going so far as to film actual wildfires in New Mexico. Only the Brave is a literal title, honoring those who have been part of The Granite Mountain Hotshots. Teaching a char broiled 500lb bear to stop drop and roll, however, is about as difficult as convincing the hard-charging firefighters in Only the Brave to cease their addictive albeit potentially deadly profession. Conversely, it could be running towards more danger, as the increased oxygen fans the flames. On one hand, it could be representative of escaping from certain danger. 
The intent of a flaming grizzly sprinting straight at you can be multi-faceted. Only the Brave may have delivered a rival to such a spectacle.
